Helmets are fine when the sun shines, but if you’re in a monsoon I find the cheesy plastic shower caps from the “No Tell Motel” will keep your head dry. They are far from a fashion statement, but they really work.

Hands and feet
I've tried various shoe covers, but the lightest and most impervious to water that I have found are the plastic bags that shelters your morning newspaper. They’re cheap– always important for the discriminating bike tourist– and if you have really big feet use the Sunday Edition.
